AI-assisted writing tools are changing academic writing, but they're not magic solutions.

AI writing tools can significantly streamline the academic writing process and enhance technical writing skills, but they carry risks and benefits.
The biggest risks are unintentional plagiarism, hallucinations and false information (Yes! AI can make up studies that don't actually exist!). But one of the main limitations of AI-assisted tools is their lack of critical thinking and tone. They cannot create logical coherence, and they struggle to create an authentic voice. (I know this, because I have graded numerous papers written by ChatGPT!)
The biggest benefits of AI-assisted writing tools are grammar, spelling, and language correction. AI-assisted writing tools can be very effective ‘assistance tools’ for improving academic writing, but their effectiveness still lies in understanding the fundamental structure of academic writing in order to make the necessary edits, select the right tone, and effectively organise your ideas and arguments.
The key to using AI-assisted writing tools effectively is;
You need to know WHAT to edit. AI suggests changes, but you need to evaluate if they improve your writing.
Tone matters! AI can provide tone options, but you need to know what tone your discipline requires.
AI can't create logical coherence. It can make your writing sound impressive, but it won't create strong logical arguments.
The real benefit comes from understanding structure, tone, and argument first.
